A Wider Role for Registered Social Landlords

In June 2000 Scottish Homes published the policy statement “A Wider Role for Registered Social Landlords”.

Following this statement members of West Dunbartonshire Voluntary Housing Forum, individually and collectively considered how best to respond. One option was to consider the potential for a joint response across the 10 associations. It was agreed to hold a conference to focus attention, make links, and learn about wider role activities both within and outwith West Dunbartonshire .

Following the conference, West Dunbartonshire Partnership and Scottish Homes funded a 12 month staff secondment. This person was managed by West Dunbartonshire Wider Role Steering Group. Together they would be responsible for setting targets, monitoring progress and forging links between the housing associations, organisations and agencies across West Dunbartonshire . After the 12 month secondment, it was decided to establish Community Links West Dunbartonshire.

Community Links West Dunbartonshire work for 8 housing associations in the West Dunbartonshire area. We act as a mechanism for the housing associations to enable local people to create and access local services. There is 5 full time staff and 1 part-time member of staff.

Examples of CLWD activities include:

produce service directories for residents detailing local services and groups who may be able to offer assistance;
establish a pilot youth Streetwork project in Dalmuir;
access and distribute over 10,000 free low energy light bulbs;
assist with community arts projects throughout the area; and
work with several local associations to develop a joint housing website, including development funding costs.
